THE MISSION
See Me I Am Human Too was Created For Anyone To Wear Who Is Ready To Be Seen And An Enterprise To Prepare People To Be Seen!

THE DESIGNER AND OWNER
My name is Devonna Smith. I am the creator of See Me I am Human Too Brand and Enterprise. A native of St. Louis, I grew up roaming the streets of Kirkwood and Webster Groves. As a natural athlete, I competed in five different sports in high school. My success on the court land me multiple college scholarships. Growing up I always that the hard part would be getting to college, I quickly learned, the true struggle would be staying. Already failing to adjust I started my freshman year at SLU in counseling but a knee season injury took away stress of basketball and for once put a pause in my life that allowed unsettled emotions, terrors and demons to surface. I quickly went from a player on basketball team to being to every aspect of my life being analyzed by a team of doctors. I went from leaning plays to figuring out which pill regiment worked best. I went from late night free throws to standing at the overpass on Grand and 40 daring myself not to jump. I did my best so those around my only saw me Smile but when I went from sleeping in my apartment to waking up in the SLU mental hospital. For once I had to let the true me be seen! I was open to those who could hear and I quit the game and it saved my life.

THE STORY BEHIND THE BRAND
Shortly after leaving my dream job in a crime lab for the city police department, See Me I Am Human Too Clothing Company came to life June 2020. While I loved the job, I found myself surrounded by people who refused to see and respect me as a human. All too many times, I found myself in situations where I was overlooked and unheard. While it was hard to walk away from my dream job I had dreamt of since a child, it was more important that I not allow the value of myself to be treated less than my counterparts. Unsure of what was next, I spent time reflecting my journey up to this point. During this time, I realized as an African American woman, I have experienced racism and injustices in numerous places I had once considered safe. Being surrounded and seeing the onslaught of senseless attacks and killings, I was overwhelmed with fear and helplessness. I couldn’t’ help but look back on the terrifying situations of uncertainty and wished I could have screamed, “SEE ME I AM HUMAN TOO!” It was at THAT moment the brand was created. These experiences and the growing up in St. Louis inspired me to create a product that helps give people a voice. We do everything in-house, including the creation and design of the website, product shoots, and designing and creating products that range from t-shirts and hoodies, to bucket hats and joggers. We have an open-door policy with the hopes of helping other BE SEEN!

The Scholarship will be given to one who demonstrates hard work, integrity and love for others, everything De’Andre showed throughout his life. The uniqueness lies in who and how one can receive this scholarship. Anyone interested in applying for this scholarship doesn’t just have to be college-bound. Those looking at trade schools are encouraged to apply as well. The application process breaks the traditional essay requirement and welcomes, even encourages interested applicants to submit a body of work that represents them. This could come in the form of a short film, clothing line, song or story that best
